Minister for Foreign Affairs Giulio Terzi met today in the margins of the UN General Assembly with Minister for Foreign Affairs of Kenya Sam K. Ongeri.

Their talks centred on regional themes, in particular the stabilisation of Somalia, whose transition phase is now complete thanks to the joint commitment of Italy and Kenya.

Minister Terzi also stressed the need, as Somali institutional consolidation continues, to place maximum attention on the themes of human rights and the protection of minority groups, particularly religious ones.

On the security front, the two ministers also discussed the serious threat of piracy not only to freedom of navigation but also to the economic prosperity of eastern Africa, which, therefore, requires a stronger framework of international collaboration founded, first and foremost, on respect for the fundamental principles of international law.
