The Council today appointed Mr Michel Reveyrand-de Menthon as EU Special Representative for the Sahel. He will lead the EU’s contribution to regional and international efforts for lasting peace, security and development in the Sahel. He will also coordinate the EU’s comprehensive approach to the regional crisis, on the basis of the EU Strategy for Security and Development in the Sahel.
Catherine Ashton, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy said: “I am delighted to appoint Ambassador Reveyrand-de Menthon as EU Special Representative for the Sahel. He will have a key role to play in driving our comprehensive policy in the region, through the EU Strategy for Security and Development in the Sahel, and liaising with our international partners. It is crucial that Mali and the rest of the Sahel return to peace, security and development.”
Ambassador Reveyrand-de Menthon is a senior French diplomat with more than 20 years’ experience. His professional career has focussed extensively on diplomacy and development cooperation with and in Africa. He recently served as ambassador of France to Mali and to Chad.
The new Special Representative will take office in April, with an initial mandate of one year.
