BlackBerry has announced the launch of the BlackBerry Classic in South Africa.

BlackBerry announced in a press release on Tuesday, 3 February 20 that it has launched the BlackBerry Classic with Vodacom, MTN and Cell C.

Returning to its BlackBerry Bold roots, the Classic is similar to the smartphone maker’s other recent devices with hardware keyboards (Q5, Q10).

First announced at Mobile World Congress in February 2014, BlackBerry said that the BlackBerry Classic was a response to feedback from customers who wanted to see the return of BlackBerry’s trackpad, and hardware action buttons (Call, Menu, Back, and Cancel/Discconect).

Like other devices running BlackBerry 10.1, the Classic will come with both BlackBerry App World and the Amazon Appstore.

Although the Amazon’s app store hosts applications for Google’s Android operating system (OS), the BlackBerry 10 OS includes a runtime for Android and is able to run many of the apps developed for the competing platform.

BlackBerry South Africa was asked for the recommended retail price of the Classic, and said that pricing would differ from operator to operator.
